Netter Pride Alliance
On April 1, the Netter Pride Alliance hosted its annual NPA Match Panel. Three NPA members, M4 students who are graduating this year, shared their perspectives on what made their match process successful. This year, among other places, NPA members matched in orthopedics at the University of California San Francisco and in internal medicine at the University of Chicago.
The Student Affairs Office at the Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine has partnered up with the Netter Pride Alliance to feature a selection of profiles of Netter LGBTQ+ community members. Whether they identify as LGBTQ+ and/or work to advance LGBTQ+ issues, this group is just a small sample of Netter students dedicated to protecting equal rights and access to healthcare for LGBTQ+ people.
Kat Woolley graduated from Netter in the class of 2021 and is a first year Orthopaedic Surgery resident at UCSF. She met her wife at the one and only Partners in her first year. She can be found on the bouldering wall, in the weight room, or on an adventure with her wife and two pets. She is passionate about empowering female athletes and fixing bones.
Carlos Echeverria is a second-year medical student at Netter, spending his summer doing stroke-related research at the Yale School of Medicine. In his free time he enjoys playing guitar and looking for new places to hike with friends in the greater New Haven area. He is very excited to rotate through Anchor Health Alliance, a gender-affirming practice in Hamden for his MeSH site in the fall.
Lala Forrest is a third-year medical student at Netter who is participating in the Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship Program at Fort Kent, Maine. She is passionate about advancing Indigenous health care and providing equitable, high quality care to underserved communities. In her free time Lala enjoys Olympic weightlifting and hopes to compete nationally.
George Hernandez is a third-year medical student at Netter. This year he served as the Treasurer for the Netter Pride Alliance. He is passionate about URiM education and care for diverse and underserved populations. At Netter, he was also the President of The Latino Medical Student Association and the Vice President of the Netter First Gen alliance. He is originally from Fresno, CA. He completed his post-bacc at Keck Graduate Institute in Claremont, CA and worked as an EMT in the greater Los Angeles area.
Daniel Regan is a second-year medical student at Netter from New Jersey. He is the Class of 2024 Vice President and is interested in going into a pediatric speciality in the future. He spends his free time reading YA novels (particularly those with queer leads), playing video games, and hanging out by a body of water.
Maria Stevens, a member of the incoming class of 2025 at Netter, began her health journey as an athlete and personal trainer, and later world traveler hitchhiking 30,000 kilometers to volunteer on organic farms and health/eco retreat centers. In the United States, she founded the Live Fitness Program, a first-of-its-kind fitness and vocational training program to support individuals with substance use disorder. She currently serves as the Director of Fitness & Education for the Bay Area’s largest fitness provider, FITNESS SF.
Mercedes Forster is a third-year medical student at Netter. This year, she served as a Co-President of the Nette Pride Alliance. Outside of school and its myriad commitments you can find her up-cycling thrift store furniture, laying in hammocks under large green trees with her wife and puppy-son, and practicing for her debut drag performance.
Marcus Alexander is a second-year medical student at Netter and President of the Netter Pride Alliance. He did his first-year MeSH in gender-affirming medicine and primary care for LGBTQ+ patients. His service work includes outreach with the Sex Workers Alliance Network (SWAN) mobile harm reduction team to prevent opioid overdoses on the streets of New Haven. He is passionate about science, literature and volleyball.
NPA and Indigenous Voices Initiative hosted two speakers to discuss the complexities of Two Spirit/Native LGBTQ identity and how it may not coincide with the practice of asking/utilizing gender pronouns: Elton Naswood, Capacity Building Consultant and LGBTQ/Two Spirit Advocate, and Dr. Andrea N. Garcia, Director of Culturally Centered Integrated Care at LA County Department of Mental Health and Visiting Project Scientist in Psychiatry at the UCLA medical school.

Join the Netter Pride Alliance in welcoming three patient panelists from the LGBTQIA community on October 9th, 12-1 pm. This event is part of the October Pride month series of events organized by the NPA.
There are two upcoming conferences in the fall of 2020 that NPA members can attend with NPA Conference Funding. The first is WPATH, which has a unique surgeon’s program for all budding surgeons and the second is Advancing Excellence in Transgender Health by Harvard Medical School and the Fenway Institute.

This conference is designed to train the whole health care team in providing responsive and confident gender-affirmative health care, grounded in research evidence and best clinical practices.
